The placing of pillows
is presently used by the nursing profession to maintain good body
alignment and to relieve pressure on known risk areas. The cushions
pictured throughout this brochure can be used as a development of
this practice, preventing mechanical and physical injury and as
a means of reducing pressure caused by physical immobilisation,
thus maintaining circulation and preventing the development of necrosis
which in turn can develop into decubitus ulcers.
Through practice and experience,
nursing staff have noted that decubitus ulcers often develop in
those sites that are identified as particularly bony prominences.
ie. heels, ankles, elbows and wrists.
The cushions have been
designed to minimise and equalise pressure exerted by the body,
thus reducing the risk of pressure sore development
