The
Cocoon - a solution to the entrapment risk for dementia patients
The
launch of the 'Orthodocs Cocoon', a totally enclosed mattress and bumper
system from the medical devices company Orthodocs Limited, has therefore
been greatly welcomed as a single and affordable solution to prevent any
risk of entrapment and save lives and serious injury.
The
'Orthodocs Cocoon' will take any mattress type, including "high risk"
air mattresses and fitted sheets may be used. The standard size is 6'6"
x 3'0" but the system can be supplied to order.
The
'Orthodocs Cocoon' covering has a 70 newton tear strength, is vapour permeable
and can be cleaned using boiling water. The bumpers are held onto the bed
rails by a series of ties and the filling, which can be changed in minutes,
is available in soft or rigid form to cope with specific needs.
Other Information
The placing of pillows
is presently used by the nursing profession to maintain good body
alignment and to relieve pressure on known risk areas. The cushions
pictured throughout this brochure can be used as a development of
this practice, preventing mechanical and physical injury and as
a means of reducing pressure caused by physical immobilisation,
thus maintaining circulation and preventing the development of necrosis
which in turn can develop into decubitus ulcers.
Through practice and experience,
nursing staff have noted that decubitus ulcers often develop in
those sites that are identified as particularly bony prominences.
ie. heels, ankles, elbows and wrists.
The cushions have been
designed to minimise and equalise pressure exerted by the body,
thus reducing the risk of pressure sore development
