Orthodocs Cocoon®

Photo: An open Orthodocs Cocoon. The Orthodocs Cocoon, a totally enclosed mattress and bumper system, has been design and produced in direct response to the needs of hospitals, nursing homes and carers who have experienced problems associated with bed entrapment and injury.

The number of dementia patients in the UK is steadily rising (currently 780,000) and sadly adverse incidents involving bed rails are also on the increase and have regrettably resulted in serious injury and death. This is very traumatic for the bereaved relatives but it also adds extra stress and anguish to those involved in caring for these patients. From the care giving institutions point of view accidents of this nature have led to substantial negligence claims, taking scarce resource away from the frontline delivery of care. The Orthodocs Cocoon has been designed to be a single and affordable solution to reduce risk of entrapment, injuries and death.

The Orthodocs Cocoon can be produced to cater for any size of matress, however any replacement matress must conform to the orginal matress specifications. It can also be constructed to replace bed rails all together, increasing patient safety and comfort were resources for custom beds are not available. The Orthodocs Cocoon is made to order, so that all patient needs can be assessed and catered for.

This work has been vindicated by a document published by the Medical Devices Agency, Report EL8, "Bed safety Equipment, an Evaluation that highlights the potential dangers associated with the use of bed rails and draws attention to the need for full risk assessment programme.

Drawing on the experience of nursing staff familiar with the Orthodocs Cocoon, dementia patients who were given the Orthodocs Cocoon, demonstrated improved sleep patterns, which could only be described as an improvement to their quality of life.

The Orthodocs Cocoon can also be used on floor level, with the addition of the Orthodocs Cocoon pallet. The Cocoon is placed on the pallet, allowing the legs of the hoist to extend under the Orthodocs Cocoon, enabling carers to hoist immobile or large patients out of the Cocoon for medical treatment or for every day care.
The introduction of Orthodocs Cocoon pallet was developed in direct response to feedback for carers, which we hope demonstrates our commitment to building relationships with our customers, rather than merely selling products.

The Orthodocs Cocoon has been designed to be used as a safe evacuation system, allowing the carers to evacuate patients from the building without having to remove patients from their imediate warm and familiar environment. This capability allows staff to evacuate patients with the maximum comfort and safety possible.

The Orthodocs Cocoon is also classified as "Non Restraint" under 21/CFR/ Section 880.6760 and is CE Marked - 93/42/EEC.
